Privacy Policy — Der Die DaZ

This Privacy Policy explains how Der Die DaZ (the “App”) handles your data. It is written to be accurate to how the App actually works: the App has no user accounts, no backend server operated by us, and collects no personal data about you beyond what is described here.

The operator is based in Switzerland. This policy is written to comply with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP / revDSG) and, for users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

1. Summary

• We do not operate a server. We never receive, store, or have access to your learning data.
• Your learning data stays on your device and is synced only to your own private iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit. We cannot see it.
• The App has no accounts, no login, no email collection, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking.
• The only data that leaves your device to a third party relates to purchases, handled by Apple and by our purchases provider, RevenueCat.
• You can export or permanently erase all your data from within the App at any time.

2. What data the App stores

The App stores only data needed to track your German-learning progress. This includes:

• Your lessons, reviews, and assignments (including your own study notes and mnemonics).
• Your level progression and review statistics.
• Your settings: review batch size, daily lesson cap, reminder time, locale, time zone, vacation mode, and weekly-recap preference.

The App does not collect or store your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, precise or approximate location, microphone or camera data, or any advertising identifier (IDFA).

3. Where your data is stored and who can access it

All of the data above is stored locally on your device (using Apple’s Core Data framework) and is synchronised to your own private iCloud database via Apple’s CloudKit service, so that it is available across your Apple devices.

This sync uses your iCloud account. The data resides in your private iCloud storage, which is governed by Apple’s privacy practices. We do not operate any server and have no ability to access, read, or retain this data. Apple’s handling of iCloud data is described in Apple’s Privacy Policy.

4. Purchases (RevenueCat)

The App offers an optional paid upgrade (“Pro”), including a lifetime purchase and auto-renewing monthly and yearly subscriptions. All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your payment details.

To manage entitlements and the “Restore Purchases” feature, we use RevenueCat as a service provider (processor). Because the App has no account system, RevenueCat identifies your purchases using an anonymous, per-device identifier that it generates, together with the Apple transaction information for your purchase. This is the only data flow from the App to a third party other than Apple.

5. Notifications

The App can send local reminder notifications (for example, when reviews are due) if you grant notification permission. These are scheduled on your device. We do not operate a push notification server and do not collect a push token or device token.

6. What the App does NOT do

For clarity, the App does not:

• require or offer an account, login, or sign-in;
• collect your email address or any contact information;
• use any analytics, telemetry, crash-reporting, or attribution SDK;
• show advertising or use advertising identifiers (IDFA) or App Tracking Transparency tracking;
• access your location, microphone, camera, photos, or contacts;
• transmit your learning data to us or to any server we control.

7. Legal basis for processing

Under the Swiss FADP (revDSG), our processing of the limited data described above is lawful because it is carried out in good faith, is proportionate, and serves the purpose of providing the App that you have chosen to use.

For users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the GDPR legal bases are:

• Storing and syncing your learning data is necessary to perform the contract of providing the App to you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Sync occurs within your own iCloud account.
• Processing purchase data via RevenueCat is necessary to provide and restore purchases you have made (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

Because we operate no server, we hold no personal data about you on our own systems.

8. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectify, export (data portability), restrict, object to, and erase your data. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC); in the EEA/UK, your local data-protection authority.

The App implements the practical rights directly:

• Export your data — the App can export all your learning data to a derdiedaz-export.json file that you can save or share (Profile → Others → Export Data).
• Erase your data — the App can permanently delete all your learning data from the device and from your iCloud copy (Profile → Others → Erase All Data).

9. Data retention

Your learning data is retained on your device and in your iCloud until you delete it (via “Erase All Data”, by deleting the App, or by removing the data from your iCloud account). Purchase records held by RevenueCat are retained according to RevenueCat’s and Apple’s policies.

10. Children

The App is intended for a general audience of German-language learners (levels A1–B2), including adult learners. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.

11. International transfers

Because the App stores data only on your device and in your own iCloud, the location of your data is determined by Apple’s iCloud infrastructure. Purchase data processed by RevenueCat may be processed in the United States; RevenueCat’s policy describes the safeguards it applies.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the latest version. Material changes will be reflected in an updated version hosted at this URL.
